Why does every movie being put into production seem to be either a reboot, a sequel, or based off some other material? Can nobody come up with an idea of their own anymore? When there are "Viewfinder" and "Magic 8 Ball" movies going into pre-production, you know Hollywood's screwed. There's even talks of rebooting Transformers, and Columbia Pictures is beginning to cast for a Spider-man reboot. Here's a list of just a fraction of the upcoming sequels, reboots, and rip-offs:
- The Green Hornet (based off of other material)
- Fantastic Four: Rebirth (reboot)
- Cleopatra (based off of other material)
- Oz: The Great and Powerfull (based off of other material)
- Tomb Rader (Reboot with...Kim Kardashian?)
- Beastly (based off of other material)
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 (based off of other material/sequel)
- Scream 4 (sequel)
- The Three Musketeers (based off of other material)
- Mean Girls 2 (sequel)
Tons more are planned on being released within the next couple years.
Even things in theaters right now:
- The A-Team (based off of other material)
- The Karate Kid (reboot)
- Shrek Forever After (sequel)
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (based off of other material)
- Sex and the City 2 (sequel)
- Iron Man 2 (sequel)
- Robin Hood (based off of other material)
We should start paying attention to how many of these we see around. We need to ask ourselves "Are we just being fed recycled entertainment? And, if so, are we OK with that?" Start sticking up for original and fresh films. Because if we keep supporting films and stories that are just unoriginal rehashes, we'll keep getting them, and Hollywood will think it's acceptable to put forth crappy effort.
What do you think?
